A spectacular light installation in Lisbon, the ‘European Green Capital 2020’, highlighted the rapid development of public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in the city.

Brief

To mark the launch of the new “all-electric MINI Cooper SE”, the Jung von Matt/Spree communications agency came up with an impressive idea that would not only attract the immediate attention of an entire city, but also inspire the whole world through an international publicity campaign.

Shards of light shining up from the ground into the sky which could be seen miles away; they needed to be installed at the majority of charging points in Lisbon. This was intended to impressively illustrate how many opportunities there are for charging an electric vehicle in a large city like Lisbon.

Challenge

The POOL crew routinely install and set up lights of all kinds. But the challenge lay much more in logistics and planning. Installation work had to be precisely coordinated in advance to achieve the desired effect.
We deployed a 150-strong crew and over 26 vehicles throughout Lisbon. What’s more, dedicated radio infrastructure was set up to cover the entire city.
The extensive approval process involving several Portuguese authorities also posed a particular challenge. For example, among other things, we needed to ensure in advance that air traffic would not be hindered by the searchlights. POOLgroup reliably obtained the approvals needed, so the light show could take place in public with no complications.

Staging

A total of 60 searchlights were used to light the night sky over Lisbon. And for added efficiency, the electricity used to power the searchlights came from the charging stations themselves, so no additional grid infrastructure was required.

Result

Thanks to some flexible logistics and advanced planning, POOLgroup was able to implement the light show flawlessly.
The illuminations were spectacular and created much media interest. Jung von Matt/Spree’s initial idea was faithfully implemented by POOLgroup – reflecting the innovative, environmentally friendly, and future-focused style of the new “all-electric MINI Cooper SE”.
