The BMW Group exhibited new products at the 2018 Paris Motor Show ‘Mondial de l'Automobile’, including the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant (IPA for short). By way of a unique introduction, Jung von Matt crated an idea which POOLgroup turned into reality. As a result, a 500-year-old painting was brought to life in the centre of Paris...

Brief

On the square in front of the Centre Georges-Pompidou, passers-by were curious: A 75 square meter LED installation depicting the Mona Lisa caused quite a stir. But it wasn’t just a lifeless painting. POOLgroup had brought Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa to life with 3D modeling and interactive content. Passers-by could ask questions and get answers straight from the world-famous Mona Lisa.

Challenge

The programming and motion design posed particular challenges: When creating different facial features and expressions, it was extremely important to ensure that the whole thing did not lose credibility. Therefore, movements and facial expressions had to look as natural as possible. And the graceful face of the Mona Lisa could not be distorted or look cartoonish.

The “living painting” was 10 meters high and 7.5 meters wide. With something so noticeable as this, any type of technical glitch would cause disappointment, so it had to be thoroughly programmed and planned in advance.

POOLgroup once again proved our reliability and delivered a flawless project with skillful, authentic technical implementation.

Result

The audience was thrilled to interact with a painting. After all, when do you ever get the chance to ask questions to a world-famous, 500-year-old piece of art? Mona Lisa said hello and even sang songs in many different languages.

Together with Jung von Matt and BMW Group, POOLgroup created a unique experience.
